I wrote this poem in honor of the greatest voice a song ever knew.... An Eternal Rose With a smooth mellow voice that tickled like wine, This Mississippi man was truly one of a kind. With ‘Hello Darlin’, he charmed the whole world and became the idol of this love-stricken girl. He sang about loving and ‘Tight-Fittin Jeans’ and to be ‘The Next in Line’ was my only dream. ‘Don’t Take It Away’ ran chills down my spine as I listened to each word, memorizing every line. I became captivated each time he would sing ‘Life Turned Her that Way’ and ‘Come See About Me.’ He was handsome, charming, grateful and glad and he became “The Best Friend a Song Ever Had.’ I proudly proclaimed him the Love of My Life causing my mother much heartache and strife. His controversial lyrics that made my heart flutter had me and that woman at odds with each other. For awhile, she forbade me to turn on his songs, and of course, I rebelled doing things that were wrong. She finally gave in and agreed to a truce; I could listen to Conway if headphones, I’d use. I told her great stories of things he had done, His number 1 hits and awards he had won; How his love for Christmas was a sight to behold with a festival of lights, live reindeer, and snow. Each Christmas, a concert was held to raise funds and he donated the proceeds to the old and the young. His respect for the fans was undoubtedly clear; He never once missed a show in 36 years. He had a giving nature and a heart full of gold but kept his endeavors of charity untold. This man was compassionate in so many ways And music has suffered since he passed away We lost a true legend when he was called home, Now he’s singing with angels around the great throne. © Cinthia Lyn Copeland…All rights reserved
