ILA-USMX Joint Safety CommitteeOSH Circular 2014-02 [21 April 2014]THE INHERENT DANGERS OF PERSONALELECTRONIC DEVICES AT WORK: SOME PROOF! Very recently, at a port not currently participating within the framework of the ILA- USMX Master Contract, a marine terminal worker was instantly killed when a container toploader moving in forward gear ran him over. An accident investigation conducted by ILA Safety Representatives reveals that the fatally injured ILA worker was, at the time of the accident, wearing audio ear buds that were attached to a personal electronic device. In other words, it is probable that the worker’s ability to detect the vehicular hazard that ultimately claimed his life was deeply impaired. While we know that the fatally injured ILA worker died at a marine terminal that has a policy prohibiting the use of such personal electronic devices, that fact it is of little comfort to the dead worker’s family, friends and to the industry itself.Think it over. Are those fleeting moments of personal entertainment (or perhaps a telephone call telling you what groceries to pick up on the way home from work) worth giving up your life for?Be Smart!
