IMPORTANT NEWS! For all who were not at the community town hall on Sunday, we made an important announcement about 2015 plans & want to share the information with everyone in the community. This is a call for community participation – I know this is lengthy, but please read it all. Over the past six years, our venue costs have increased significantly. Anyone interested can contact me for particular details. The overlying concern is that for the past several years what we’ve been able to pay in art grants is only 1/3 of what we have paid in venue costs. Our thought is this - we are an ARTS festival - our goal should be to fund A LOT of art! We would like to keep our overhead costs minimal and have our largest budget item that of art grants not venue rent. We are already aware of much cheaper options available. Further, when we have talked with other Burning Man regionals, we’ve learned that our venue cost is much higher than any other. Thus, the BOD decided the best course of action would be to develop a Request for Proposal and proceed with a Venue Search Process. This is quite a detailed process - We are sending out a Request for Proposal to 18 identified venue sites across Utah (including Seabase). Weve requested responses by the end of November. In December we will compile all the data into an easy to understand & evaluate document. We most likely will be doing some site visits as well. On January 11th, our Q1 Town Hall, we will present the background & data gathered to you, the community, to gain feedback from you, the community. Then, at our production meeting later in January, the BOD will vote to select the 2015 venue. We understand this is an emotional issue for many people on both sides of the issue. What we ask you is to try to set aside emotions and look objectively at the data when it is presented. So far, the RFP has been sent to the following potential venue locations: Seabase, Ft. Buenaventura, Eagle Point Ski Resort, Jenkstar Ranch, Beaver Mountain, Shooting Star RV Resort, Desert Peak Complex, Nordic Valley, Boulder Mountain Guest Ranch, Entrada Institute, Rock Creek Guest Ranch, Hidden Springs Rnch, J/L Ranch, Nine Mile Ranch, Rose Ranch Resort, Lizzie & Charlie’s RV & ATV Park, Box C Ranch, Big Rock Candy Mountain Resort & 5 private parties. So, how can you be involved in this process? For starters, we want you to help us find venue locations! Thus far, five people have come up to me after hearing about this process at the town hall & said – hey, my friend, parents, grandparents, etc have land – this is AWESOME! In addition to those listed above, if you know of any locations or private land owners that might be a great spot for Element 11, please let me know & we can get an RFP out to them as well. The more people working on this, the better. Once all the RFP responses are in, please plan on attending the January 11th Town Hall to hear all the data & provide feedback. We really want the community to be involved in this process & this is how you can be! At the town hall on Sunday, Dali Mama, whom I’m sure many of you know, told the story how SynORGY was at the Sun Tunnels & how they got kicked off that land. How they were all worried that it wouldn’t be the same. They found Seabase & realized that a new location worked just fine. The point of her message was this – we are not a location – we are a COMMUNITY. Where we gather together is less important. What IS important is the people who make up this beautiful community that we all love. As always, if you have questions, you can contact any of the BOD members or RC’s individually. If you wish to contact the entire BOD, you can do so by emailing [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your willingness to embark on this search process with an open mind.
