INDO-MARECLIM WINTER SCHOOL ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND VARIABILITY, MARINE ECOSYSTEMS AND COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT Nansen Environmental Research Centre India 2nd – 7th November 2013 COCHIN, INDIA Climate change and variability, specifically related to the Indian Ocean, have a profound influence on the Indian monsoon, and on marine biological production, biodiversity and the integrity and functioning of marine ecosystems. Monsoon, coastal upwelling, climate variability and resultant fluctuations in marine fishery resources have significant impact on the livelihood of coastal fisherfolk. INDO-MARECLIM is an EU FP7 funded programme which addresses the above issues by way of model experiments, remote sensing studies and analyses of data collected and compiled from different sources. INDO-MARECLIM announces a one-week winter school to be held at Bolgatty Palace and Island Resort, Kochi (India) from 2 – 7 November 2013. During the winter school, which is an inter-disciplinary training programme, a select group of instructors from India and Europe will provide lectures and practical training on recent advancements in the global understanding of marine ecosystems, climate change and their socio-economic impacts. The instructors will include: Marcello Vichi (University of Bologna, Italy), Phillip Williamson (University of East Anglia, UK), Prof. Trevor Platt (PML, UK), Dr. Shubha Satyendranath (PML, UK), Dr. Jan Even Øie Nilsen (NERSC, Norway), Dr. Annalisa Cherchi (CMCC, Italy), Lasse Petterson (NERSC, Norway), Dr. Annemarie Groot (Alterra, Netherlands), Prof. P. V. Joseph (NERCI, India), Prof. N. R. Menon (NERCI, India). Applications welcome from EU and Indian PhD students, post doctoral fellows and scientists in early stages of career development. The maximum number of participants is restricted to 35. Selection would be on the basis of academic skills, qualification in the relevant subjects, statement of interest and letters of support.
