IRVINE LAKE REPORT By Steve Carson 6/16/13 Irvine Lake catfish bite stays good; 10.15 Blue Cat tops catches The catfish population at Irvine Lake was stocked-up again with thousands of pounds of whiskerfish after opening weekend, which spurred the bite on, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. “The Catfish bite continued to be wide open with lots of limits being reported.” observed Getty. “Also a surprising amount of Common Carp where showing up in the counts as well!” It’s no surprise that Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights were “prime time” for catfish anglers this week. Productive baits included mackerel and shrimp, along with “pike mackerel” a baitfish species technically known as saury, and available at many fresh fish markets. Strong scents like Bite-On or Gulp! worked well for some catfish anglers. Limit stringers of catfish came from Santiago Flats, the west shore, and mid-lake. The majority of the whiskerfish were quality-grade 2 to 8-pounders, but some larger fish were definitely in the mix. Hot spots for the Catfish where boat dock cove, Santiago Flats and the West Shore. Bass anglers found their quarry holding deep during the day, hitting dropshot-rigged plastics at 25 feet during daytime. The mostly 2 to 4-pound largemouth heated up as the sun went down, going after topwaters and 10-inch Power Worms rigged Texas-style. The Point Seekers Bass Club held a tournament at the lake on Saturday evening and that tournament was won with a 17.85lb limit topped by a 6lb Largemouth Bass caught on a Frankendonny BG Dizzle Bluegill Swimbait. The few anglers who went after crappie found moderate numbers of slabs on white Atomic Tubes with a mealworm pinned on, but plenty of bluegill were hitting on plain mealworms or waxworms. Anglers skilled at deepwater trout techniques dredged up some nice 3 to 7-pound rainbows with leadcore line and downrigger trolling techniques. Families with children age 12 and under found good numbers of 1 to 3-pound catfish on mackerel baits in the Kids Lagoon. Surface temperature on the main lake is 76F, with the lake level dropping slightly. Underwater visibility is rated very good along most of the lake with up to 15ft of visibility on the main lake and 5ft in the Flats. The lake is closed on Tuesdays during the summer months. Outstanding catches of the week at Irvine Lake included: Mike Traut of Costa Mesa, 7-11 rainbow trout on an Excel Spoon at the dam Derek Thompson of Canyon Country, 10.15 Blue Catfish on Mackerel soaked in Bite On Cajun in the Santiago Flats.
