IRVINE LAKE REPORT By Steve Carson 7/28/13 Irvine Lake catfish action stays good; 11lb pound whiskerfish tops catches Catfish anglers heading to Irvine Lake this week found plenty of good-grade channel cats, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. “The Catfish bite was really good near the creek channel in the Santiago Flats during both the day and the night”, observed Getty. “Lots of quality 3-6lb fish are being checked in”. Most of the catfish were prime eating-size channel cats in the 3 to 6-pound class, with a sprinkling of larger specimens mixed in. Productive catfish baits included mackerel, shrimp, bonito, skipjack, and pike mackeral. Good catches were reported from Santiago Flats, Boat Dock Cove, and the west shoreline. Bass anglers found their quarry in several different areas, with 2 to 4-pound largemouth hitting dropshot-rigged plastics near hard structure at 25 to 30 feet during the day. As dusk arrives, the bass move up shallow, with evening techniques like topwaters, plastic frogs, and Texas-rigged 10-inch Power Worms scoring some better-grade bucketmouths. Plenty of bluegill were available on mealworms and waxworms in brushy shallow areas. Trout anglers found the fish still biting in the deeper waters by the dam. Anglers who specialize in deepwater trolling and or deep bait fishing are still scoring close to or limits of Trout. Some crappie were caught on under floating lanterns on white Atomic Tubes with a mealworm trailer. A handful of hybrid striped bass to 5pounds were caught and released by catfish anglers soaking mackerel and shrimp. Families with children age 12 and under found good numbers of 1 to 3 pound catfish on mackerel or marshmallow/mealworm combos. Surface temperature on the main lake is 78-81degrees. Underwater visibility is rated very good with visablity to 13ft, with the lake level slowly dropping. The lake is open for night fishing until 11 PM on Thursdays, and until Midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
