IS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST BUILT UPON PETER AS THE ROCK? When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”[a] 14 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” 15 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah,[b] the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John,[c] because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. 18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’),[d] and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell[e] will not conquer it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid[f] on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit[g] on earth will be permitted in heaven.” WHAT TRIGGER JESUS TO TELL THE DISCIPLES HOW THE CHURCH WILL BE BUILT? It is upon the right confession and belief that “He is the Son of the living God”. WHO WAS ABLE TO CONFESS IT CORRECTLY? Peter HOW DID PETER KNEW IT? Jesus said, “my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.” DID PETER KNOW HE IS NOT THE ROCK? YES IN FACT HE WROTE IT: 1. 1 Peter 2:4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him 2. 1 Peter 2:6 -8 See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”[a] 7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”[b] 8 and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.”[c] DID PAUL KNEW CHRIST IS THE ROCK TOO? 1 Cor 10:4. and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. WHO IS THE ROCK IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, HUMAN OR GOD? Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the ROCK, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. Deuteronomy 32:15,18 Jeshurun (Israel) grew fat and kicked; filled with food, they became heavy and sleek. They abandoned the God who made them and rejected the ROCK their Savior. You deserted the ROCK, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth. ARE THERE SCRIPTURES THAT SAYS PETER IS THE ROCK FOUNDATION WHERE THE CHURCH I BUILT? NONE, because Christ and the Scripture never meant it to be. WHY CANT PETER BE THE ROCK FOUNDATION WHERE THE CHURCH I BUILT?? 1. Peter is sinner like any man. Matthew 26:31-35 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’[a] But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.” “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same. WHO LEADS THE FIRST CHURCH, THE CHURCH IN JERUSALEM? PETER , JAMES, AND JOHN OR JAMES, PETER AND JOHN. 1. In fact, JAMES, PETER ,[a] and JOHN, who were known as pillars of the church, recognized the gift God had given me, and they accepted Barnabas and me as their co-workers. Galatians 1:19, I saw none of the other apostles—only James, the Lord’s brother. 2. Acts 15:6 When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them./The apostles and elders met to consider this question. 7 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them... DID PETER COMMIT ANOTHER MISTAKE ACCORDING TO PAUL? Galatians 2:11-14 When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. 13 The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray. 14 When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs? WHO IS PAUL AND WHO IS PETER? apostle to the Jews or gentiles?) Galatians 2:7 but contrariwise, when they saw that the Gospel to the Uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the Gospel to the Circumcision was unto Peter WHY DID PAUL FROM THE LEAST APOSTLE BECAME THE GREATEST APOSTLE AND WROTE 2/3 OF THE NEW TESTAMENT? 1. Philippians 3:4-8 although I myself might have confidence even in the flesh. If anyone else has a mind to put confidence in the flesh, I far more: 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless. 7 But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss [a]in view of the surpassing value of [b]knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, [c]for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, 2. 1 Corinthian 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. HOW HUMBLE WAS PAUL? But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard this, they tore their clothes and ran in among the multitude, crying out 15 and saying, “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them, HOW DO WE COMPARE PAUL AND PETER? Paul became the greatest apostle surpassing the 12 disciples and he wrote 2/3 of the New Testament. Chrsit exalted Paul because of his humility. ( Luke 14:11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.), and his teachings became the basis of the gospel preached to all gentiles (non Jews).
