ITALIAN BAROQUE MARBLE SCULPTURE MARTIRIO DI SANTA CECILIA (MARTYRDOM OF SAINT CECILIA) BY STEFANO MADERNO AT THE BASILICA DI SANTA CECILIA IN TRASTEVERE (BASILICA OF SAINT CECILIA IN TRASTEVERE) IN ROME, ITALY Stefano Madernos (1576 - 1636) Italian Baroque marble sculpture Martirio Di Santa Cecilia (Martyrdom Of Saint Cecilia) holds a position as the most recognizable and famous artwork at the Basilica. The subject of the piece is of course the death of St. Cecilia (Classical Latin: Sancta CAEcilia), in Roman Catholic Christianity, the Patroness Saint of poets, Church music, and musicians. Among the most famed of Romes early Christian Martyrs, she was said to have been Engaged to a Valerian, who was too Martyred for his Conversion to the Christian Faith. St. Cecilia belonged to Romes noble Gens Caecilia, a family line which traced their origin mythologically to Caeculus (Classical Latin: CAEculus), the son of the fire God Vulcan.
