If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. Matt 16:24 The Sunday following the Exaltation of the Holy and Lifegiving Cross commemorates this invitation of Jesus to those who would follow Him. This short verse highlights the following key points: 1) Freedom in Christ. Freedom to choose Him or to ignore Him. This attribute of God is given as a gift to us who are created in His Image and Likeness. This freedom is missing from other religions. 2) Denial of ones sinful self and acceptance of the Divine Will. 3) Taking up our own Cross and participating in the saving Cross and Passion of Christ, even unto death. 4) Following Christ. To follow Christ is to participate in His life, to do His will, to trust in His mercy and Divine Plan. Let us take up our Cross and follow Christ to His Kingdom!
