If you are a parent and an atheist ..... I comprehend that you - TopicsExpress

If you are a parent and an atheist ..... I comprehend that you wouldnt want your child to have religion used against them in their life.... I see the need to teach my kids and be loving and nurturing and not try and make them behave through the fear of fire and brimstone but I think that some fellow parents are far too butt hurt when god is referenced. I like letting my kids grow and make decisions for themselves...You wont ever find me throwing a fit because religion is referenced in public school unless one religion is being treated like it is superior to the rest. I try and give my kids the tools to be able to think for themselves and understand the difference between fantasy and reality. The way some people act .... its almost as if they appear to scared that their kids will be taught about religion, ask questions, and then believe what the parents do not. As a parent, I can think of many things that I am concerned about in my childrens lives much more than if someone teaches them something I dont believe in because I think it is fantasy. .... I could raise a child who has no idea about the different religions .... and believes what I do because they are ignorant because I wanted them to believe as I do. I could raise a child who doesnt respect other peoples belief systems. Even if one of my boys grows up and wants to be a priest, I will do nothing but support my their decisions and goals. I want to give my children all the tools to succeed in life and I think keeping them from learning something is wrong. I want my kids to be well rounded and make decisions based on all the facts and not half truths. I dont want my kids to always agree with what I am saying. I want them to think for themselves and be able to make their own decisions and form their own opinions. Refusing to let them learn about something that is such a huge aspect in some peoples lives is not only unfair it is unhealthy. Children are nothing more than miniature people. Children are capable of handling much more than most people give them credit for. If your child is smart enough to think by themselves, they are also strong enough to live free from being oppressed by other peoples belief systems. Not everything about religion is bad and your children might benefit from the messages inside some religions. We all want the best for our kids and we all want them to be good people. If they use religion to help them be better people what is the harm? Why are some people so concerned that kids might learn and benefit from something that the parents themselves havent found to be helpful?
