If you get this joke, youre old as dirt... but I want to ask this: is anyone else out there who absolutely hated The Honeymooners? I detested that show as a kid... I used to wonder why Alice was married to such a loudmouth bully and why if he had a union job driving a bus in NYC they couldnt even afford curtains (couldnt she sew together a few old kitchen towels for Gods sakes?)... or why 2 women like Alice and Trixie who didnt have children couldnt get the hell out of the damn tenement and find a decent job and leave those a-holes -- or at least stay with those a-holes and buy some curtains! I think I understood even in grade school that this was Hollywoods weird idea of feminism: 2 strong women, Alice and Trixie, living heroically with husbands who were stupid and/or bullies (and sometimes both). I think also it was the beginning of my love for decorating (hah!). If my dad or either of my grandfathers threatened my mom or my grandmothers with a clenched fist and a threat to bop them to the moon.... well, that would have been the LAST thing my dad or grandfathers ever did! Actually, I dont remember my family ever watching this show but I must have seen it somehow, maybe in the homes of friends. Oh, and I never liked I Love Lucy either... made my skin crawl but for different reasons: in that show, Lucy was the ditz. So, what do we have? Two significant TV shows built on (1) strong women living with insufferable clods and (2) a ditzy woman who needs a husband to keep her from all the harms she stumbles into because she is a... well, ditz -- but he loved her so that message is men love ditzy women. Compare these to the TV show The Good Wife and yes I think weve come a long way, baby!!!! (Not far enough but progress has been made.)
