If you turn, twist, fold, crumple, jump on and stamp a piece of pristine white paper, can you restore it back to me as I gave it to you? If not, then how will you repair the child you have damaged as a teacher asked Dr. Ismail during his lecture on Making a Scientist. Dr. Ismails talk focused on the need of the hour - the making of the human being, more than the making of a scientist. He gave gems of information in a clear lucid style, peppered with many examples and anecdotes. Your child needs your child and unconditional supporthe said exhorting parents to be supportive rather than task masters. Ïf you plan A for your child fails, well there are 25 other letters in the alphabet to make plans with.he said. Children need to be encouraged to pursue their dreams without having the burden of parental expectations. Then Dr. Ismail trained his spotlight on teachers. With many a hilarious example, he passed a very serious message - how teachers pre judge children, how they give up easily on children, and how this impacts and damages a childs personality. Very often patience and compassion can work wonders to pull out the genius of each child. Dr. Ismail outlined how a parent can support a child in their science investigations - by being aware of the steps in the scientific method and enabling the child to follow them. As a judge of the Intel Science fair team in India, he talked about how most projects were rejected due to a failure to follow proper method. Hauroon Jamal, director of Al Qamar Academy and Spark Science Clubs followed up with a presentation of how science and maths are taught at Al Qamar Academy. While in the early years, children are encouraged to observe, in the primary years, they start conducting experiments, recording results, making inferences to understand science laws. In the Middle school years, Spark Science club supplements the IGCSE science and math curriculum by having regular sessions where children use an inquiry based approach to üncovering the laws of science themselves. Similarly Spark runs a Maths Challenger Program at Al Qamar similar to the Russian Math circles to encourage students gifted in Maths. Spark Science Club also conducts sessions for non Al Qamar students on the weekends. Spark will soon be launching a program where other schools can host Spark sessions at their locations. The talk was wonderful and inspiring. Many parents benefited from the words of wisdom and resolved to start afresh with their children. https://picasaweb.google/113120920346192713776/DrSultanIsmailTalk?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCOLBhZy3mIP77QE&feat=directlink
