If you’re joining us in reading through Isaiah and Jeremiah today’s reading is Jeremiah chapter’s 19-20 and the devotion is taken from Jeremiah chapter 20:1-6. When the priest Pashhur son of Immer, the official in charge of the temple of the LORD, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things, he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin at the LORD’s temple. The next day, when Pashhur released him from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The LORD’s name for you is not Pashhur, but Terror on Every Side. For this is what the LORD says: ‘I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; with your own eyes you will see them fall by the sword of their enemies. I will give all Judah into the hands of the king of Babylon, who will carry them away to Babylon or put them to the sword. I will deliver all the wealth of this city into the hands of their enemies—all its products, all its valuables and all the treasures of the kings of Judah. They will take it away as plunder and carry it off to Babylon. And you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house will go into exile to Babylon. There you will die and be buried, you and all your friends to whom you have prophesied lies.’ ” Many times children are given names that reflect who they are. I remember in the movie Dancing with Wolves the little girl’s name was “Stands with a Fist.” Immediately you are reminded of a person standing with clenched fists in defiance of what’s going on. While we in the United States don’t generally name our children by personality it was a very common trait in ancient Israel. Pashhur means “prosperity.” His parents named him this because they felt that his personality showed an ability to be prosperous. However, after he had Jeremiah arrested and placed in stocks, Jeremiah pronounced a judgment on him. No longer would he be named “prosperous” but rather now his name would be known as “terror.” This is a very clear picture of how God views judgment. When we have a relationship with him through Christ we are prosperous. However when there is no relationship all we can look forward to is judgment. So what is your fate? Is it prosperity or is it judgment?
