Ill be teaching this workshop on the 22nd and 23rd of February ... still deciding on a location, but Ill update the event page when I figure that out. ----- Are you sick of getting viruses and spyware? Want your computer to run faster? Dont trust Microsoft now that you know they collaborate with the NSA/FBI? Done paying tons of money for buggy/insecure software? ... Then it sounds like you might want to check out Linux (a free/open-source operating system) as an alternative to Microsoft Windows. I am going to be teaching a two day workshop on how to install and use Linux through Free Skool Olympia on February 22-23 (location TBA). It is recommended that you are comfortable with basic computer skills (using a web browser, burning a CD, etc.) for this class. In this workshop, I will be covering topics like: * What is open source software? * What is Linux and why might you want to use it instead of (or in addition to) Windows? * How to download and try out Linux before you install it * Installing Linux * Dual booting: installing Linux on your computer along with another operating system (such as Windows) * How to accomplish everyday tasks (web browsing, managing files, etc.) in Linux * How to download new software packages * Keeping your system secure and updated * Getting help & support when you have problems with your Linux system If you have a computer youd like to install Linux on, bring it to the class with you -- but if cant bring a computer and still want to learn, its totally fine to just work along with someone else who is installing on their computer. If you can bring a blank DVD to make an installation disc, that would be great, but if you dont have any DVDs, I will have some that I can provide for free. Also, if you already know how to use Linux and want to come out and help for one or both days of the workshop, I would love your help! The more people we have that can assist new users, the smoother everything will go. Please contact me with any questions at: [email protected]
