Im a bit confused about the accuracy of this new tool. This report states that its Social Progress Index framework/ criteria covers three aspects: 1 / Does a country provide for its people’s most essential needs? 2 / Are the building blocks in place for individuals and communities to enhance and sustain wellbeing? 3 / Is there opportunity for all individuals to reach their full potential? These three questions define the three dimensions of Social Progress: Basic Human Needs, Foundations of Wellbeing, and Opportunity, noting the limitations more traditional methods of measurement (i.e. looking at GDP or the rate of economic growth) in an attempt to measure the things that really matter to people such as food, shelter, access to education and health care as well as economic opportunity and environmental stability. However, the report fails to look at significant indicators such as poverty, income inequality (the gap between the rich and poor) and employment which would tell a completely different story about this country. Or are we happy to continue on reporting (like we do on OECD indicators) that mainstream NZ is doing fine?
