Im going to come out and say it. Watching the extreme outpouring of comments for Robin Williams family and the waxing poetic about how sad the situation is, and the public false empathy has really disturbed me. My father committed suicide. My grandfather committed suicide. No one tries to comfort you in real life. And trite truisms posted on the internet dont mean a thing. If you know someone whos depressed and has withdrawn, call them. Go to their house. Help ease the desperation. If someone you know is a survivor of suicide, dont offer any let me now if you need anythings. Go to their house with a bottle of wine and some really godawful movies. And let them cry, if they need to. Dont try to fix it. Dont try to make them feel like they need to move on. And for the love of all things holy, dont tell them that suicide is selfish.
