Im in catch up mode tonight (can you tell?).. This one is on bulletproof coffee. Is it awesome as they say? Yes, but... There are some things to be aware of if youre going to become part of the bulletproof coffee crowd. Bulletproof coffee is essentially coffee with a heap of good fats added, usually grass fed butter and MCT oil or coconut oil. These are used in place of the milk you might usually use. The benefits that people claim are that it gives your metabolism a kick start to burn fats throughout the day, makes you more alert and keeps you satiated for longer (you might not need that muffin at 10am).. And I agree with all of those claims, but there are a few things you need to be aware of. It can be a very high calorie beverage and although Im not a fan of counting calories you need to be aware of this and consider what (if anything) youre eating alongside your bulletproof coffee. If youre having your bulletproof coffee with your porridge, toast or other carb laden breakfast you could be in for a struggle. Bulletproof coffee will kick start your fat burning, but fat burning is turned off in the presence of elevated blood glucose levels (and associated insulin). So if youre having a high carb breakfast with your bulletproof coffee youre not going to get the fat burning benefits and youll still experience the 10am blood sugar crash. Given the high caloric content of the coffee you may find that the muffin at 10am causes over eating with potential weight gain. My recommendation is to have bulletproof coffee with a high (good) fat, moderate protein breakfast - eggs are my regular go to. Even better would be to skip breakfast all together and just have the bulletproof coffee. This is what I do on fasting days. Caffeine can be an appetite depressant so you need to make sure the other foods youre eating during the day are nutrient dense, otherwise you could find yourself lacking essential nutrients. So how do I do bulletproof coffee? I only have it once or twice a week, always and only in the morning. I brew a cup of coffee using my pod coffee machine. In the milk frother I put 2 TBS UNSALTED grass fed butter (melted), 1 TBS MCT oil and half a cup-ish of coconut cream. I froth this together then pour into the brewed coffee. If youre not used to eating large quantities of good fats you might think this would taste heavy, but it doesnt. Its creamy and pleasantly filling. Sometimes Ill add a raw egg to the brewed coffee and blend it with my Bamix before adding the frothy fat mix. On days I have a bulletproof coffee I dont eat any breakfast and my next meal will be at 3 or 4pm. Its a great way to kickstart ketosis after a challenging diet day, or for a fasting day, or when you just know youre not going to have a chance to stop and eat. I would suggest you be in a fat burning state before relying on it. If youre a regular carb burner (you need to eat every 2-3 hours, cant exercise without eating first, wake up hungry) the bulletproof coffee probably wont help much and will just add extra calories that you dont need. If anyone has any experiences/questions Id love to hear them.
