Im not going to lie, when Layla started public school this year I - TopicsExpress

Im not going to lie, when Layla started public school this year I was proceeding with caution. My friends and their kids have experienced different situations concerning district policy over the past few years and I have heard lots of stories of kid’s educational experience suffering for poor decisions that even their schools and teachers have no control over. I was so grateful that Layla was assigned to a wonderful teacher and a lower class size. I was elated and counting my blessings. Now here we are a month in to school and Layla is doing great. She is making friends and is excited to tell me about things she learning at school. She feels connected to her teacher and is chanting the Gatewood song at night over dinner. Now.... a month into the school year, the school board has decided that Gatewood, due to the low numbers that we so greatly appreciated, shall dissolve one of its first grade classes. Children from that class will now be split between the remaining three classes. That first grade teacher will be moved to teach fourth grade at Gatewood and then one of our fourth grade teachers will go teach at Fairmount Park down the street. Twenty first graders will change classrooms and a fourth grade class will get a new teacher. In an effort to stop this change from occurring and disrupting the educational program at Gatewood, the idea to raise money to fund one teacher’s salary has been proposed and an emergency parent/teacher meeting has been called for this afternoon at 3pm. I feel grateful that I am surrounded by parents and teachers who give a shit about what happens to our kids and are willing to come together as a community to try and fix it. But, wtf?
