Im not overly emotional but we had Grandparents Day at my grandsons school today. Our grandson is 7 years of age and in Year 2. During the classroom visit, we did the typical grandparent thing and looked at our little heros classwork and had a bit of fun with a Discover the Word game. At one stage, while my wife was with our golden haired boy, my daughter said Poppy, you know S****, R*** and M****** from soccer. They dont have their grandparents here today, so perhaps you might like to look at their work too. I was reluctant because its not PC these days for a 60 year old male to approach 7 year olds but I relented and went over to the boys and we struck up a conversation. One of the boys grandparents live in Columbia, anothers live in Ireland. The third boy lost his grandfather 2 months ago and Grandma wasnt up to attending today. This revelation almost brought a tear to my eye. In addition, unfortunately, the parents of all 3 kids couldnt attend either. Im REALLY glad my daughter talked me into approaching the boys as we had a lot of laughs trying to find the hidden words on the paper and discussing the feats of their soccer team. It became a bit competitive too as my wife joined in and she, with 2 of the lads, was trying to find more words than the remaining youngster and me. After I left, I thought Ahhh Terry, that was your good deed for the day. However, in reality, it was more how these boys had made ME happy, by allowing me to join in THEIR game. THEIR random act of kindness in letting an uncool old man have half an hours fun was what actually made my day.
