Im not the biggest fan of Singapore, but this is just bad reporting lah! I expect better from the Guardian. This piece seems to be written to go down well with a left-of-left western-liberal mindset: its full of hyperbole, selective representation of facts, and one glaring inaccuracy (Singles are prohibited from owning property...) that collectively paint Singapore as being a Nazi-esque place where flying robot policemen monkeys with lasers on their heads swiftly and omnisciently descend on any neer-do-well. The rules - there are too many! The punishments - oh they are too onerous. Quick! Gag the children lest they laugh in a no-laughing zone! The poor babes will languish in Changi prison till theyre old enough to be pensioners! Ye gods, there are no pensions here?! Oh the humanity!!1! The comments section is full of the sort of tut-tutting twats who have never visited Singapore but hate it on principle because this isnt a place where people are free. Give me a break. Theres more to self-expression than being able to do whatever you want whenever you want. No ones right to self-expression should impinge on the health or safety of anyone else. Property and cars are going to be expensive here because land is scarce. And what is with the bloody Western obsession with the chewing gum ban? Its not even a blanket ban anymore; Ive been buying gum from pharmacies for years. On the other hand, if articles like this one are helping to keep the pillar-pissing, deoderant-optional, white trash sort of chav it ostensibly appeals to out of Singapore... Well maybe I owe its author a beer.
