Im on the last leg home from an epic journey to the World SUP - TopicsExpress

Im on the last leg home from an epic journey to the World SUP championships in Nicaragua and I want to share some of what I experienced and learned while its fresh in my mind. Every day a local would ask me how much the prize money was and they kept being surprised that there was none. It caused me to reflect on what the attraction to a world championship event was when I had to pay for myself to get there and then deal with all the stress of the event. The answer took time to articulate, but I think I found it. The first thing is community: to exist for a brief time in a magical community of people who love our sport so passionately is a gift. To make new friends from all corners of the globe and meet people I have admired for years is a blessing. Then - to witness humans push themselves to the very limits of their potential is humbling and inspiring. Here I learned the most. @ethan koopmans taught me the meaning of the word sportsmanship. He embraced challenge adversity and disappointment and emerged heroic. This is what its about. Tarryn Kyte taught me what fearlessness looks like. She dived in to the unknown and discovered her own untapped potential. Isnt this what a hero is? Justin Bing showed me what total focus, commitment and humility looks like, and he is just the nicest person you could ever meet. Did i mention that he rip? Bones taught me about the commitment winning requires and his spirituality was a great support. Starboard Dylan Frick showed me how to fight for what you want and that he has the potential to be a champion. Nic Muhl showed me what dedication and passion look like and is the most positive guy Ive ever met. James Raaff is just the the most stoked person I have ever met and demonstrated the power of giving freely with an open heart. He also rips and tells great stories. Dany Ribbink taught me what great parenting looks like. Dave Maxwell was a rock of support and an island of calm in the storm. And he takes great pictures. Just dont let him start telling horror stories. I still dont know why he has so many. Thanks to you and Bruce Johnston for giving me this amazing opportunity. To my new friends who taught me so much about poise, humility, generosity and just bring cool. Jordan Mercer, Shakira Westdorp, Jackson Close, you guys rock.
