Im proud to say these are some of the accomplishments during my terms as Chief with quorum of council. Without the support of the working Council at that time all of this wouldnt have been successful. I was first elected in 1998 and I was approached by an Elder, who spoke for the people that wanted to be heard. His question to me was: What would you do if you ever got into council? my answer, I cant promise you anything materialistic, since quorum of council need to agree to any decisions made on behalf of the band. I can promise you that I would treat everybody fairly, equally and with respect. A Bit of History: 2 year Terms--1998-2000 --Councilor, 2000-2004- Chief All of the following accomplishments were either proposal driven & through negotiation 1. Had the two electoral district Childs Lake & Boyer River turned back to its original one electoral district, so all members can vote as one, as it should be as we are one Nation. 2. Fire-hall in Childs Lake/Fire Truck 3. Cha gas bar and store in Childs Lake 4. Daycare/Head-start in Boyer 5. Sewer-line in central Boyer. 6. seventeen houses built between both communities 7. Play ground in Childs Lake 8. Negotiated & Signed an Education Agreement with Fort Vermilion School Division which included a BFN member to be a Trustee on FVSD Board 9. Research Land Claims: submitted to the government and accepted for negotiations, this includes ammunition/twine, road right of way & cows/plows. We had to start from scratch, since no documentation was found at the office. 10. Started negotiation with Alberta Government to replace bridge in Boyer, still in negotiations today 11. Mapping & flagging the Traditional Territory south of Childs Lake & Boyer. All that Traditional land is protected from any industry and forestry activities without consulting with BFN. We now have the rest of our traditional territory to map and flag. 12. Purchased new water truck, tow truck, a used track hoe, backhoe, bobcat, D6H and a D5 Cat, Eavestroughing Business (not active today) 13. Due to surplus in programs the band was able to assist children in sports & other activities. I probably missed other things we accomplished. While I was out of Council for one term, I worked for another First Nation as their Finance Controller/Office Manager. I was re-elected and decided to return home even though I was offered a higher position as Band Administrator. I refused because I still wanted to help out my first nation. NEW GOALS: Some of my goals for the future in no particular order. 1. Get out of co-management. I feel that with good accountability, transparency, timely reports and proper budgeting, we could gain our trust with Aboriginal Affairs. We will start to receive the funds that were stripped from our programs. 2. Continue the Land Claims: Make sure membership is involved in strategy planning for distribution & long term goals. 3. Negotiations with Alberta Government on our Traditional Lands, which would spark Economic Development with Industry & Forestry. 4. Youth programming to keep our children busy year round. 5. Our Elders will be taken care of with the respect that they deserve. 6. 24 hr. Care Facility, I was told this would never happen, I dont believe in the word never. 7. Possible Day Care in Childs Lake 8. Administration office 9. Bring the Fire Department back to par, negotiate with Mackenzie County & High Level for a joint venture. 10. Monthly reporting on web page for successes & challenges. 11. Discussion with membership for New Business Ventures. 12. Cha Garage can be utilized to generate extra income. 13. Bring the bands company up to industry standards, obtain core policies etc. 14. Secure a Firefighter agreement with Forestry. 15. Would like to see Council meeting minutes posted, this way the membership is never left in the dark. I have worked with number of Chiefs and Councilors in the past & assisted in any way possible. I have always worked for the betterment of Beaver First Nation and to serve its members. Im willing and able to work with anyone and open to all suggestions to make our Nation strong and powerful. Proactive Determination, with moving forward attitude will succeed Good Luck to all Nominees!
