Im slightly obsessed with sleep at the moment with a 1 year old who chooses to sleep only a few hours a night...... I know only too well when you are tired you tend to reach out for the junk food instead of eating healthily. This is because lack of sleep increases ghrelin (appetite increasing hormone) and decreases leptin (appetite supressing hormone). Theres also a huge link between lack of sleep and and high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and obesity. New research published in the journal SLEEP found that sleep deprivation has a similar effect to stress on our immune system. Other studies have shown that adequate sleep helps keep the immune system working properly, and that long-term sleep loss is a major risk factor for immune system problems. Mmmm, now try telling that to a baby:)
