Im so PROUD of the Person my Mother is and has become. First and foremost she ~ at nearly 85 ~ continues to grow on a Human Level, which I think is so Powerful for her and those around her. She grew up in the Deep South, when Racism was the order of the day, yet she rejected that notion and forged livelong Friendships with many. She taught us to stand Tall and be Proud of our Convictions. Recently while driving through Atlanta she told me a story that I had never heard. As she stared out the window, she recounted the day, the Freedom Riders visited our small Southern town. When she arrived at Galloways Restaurant, that hot Summer morning, where she worked for many years, she was greeted by the owner Mrs. Galloway, who was in a tizzy. She was wringing her hands in despair as she exclaimed They are Coming to which my Mother replied Who are Coming? The Black People are coming to Eat in the Dining Room. What are we going to do? My Mother told her everything would be fine and that there was not going to be any Violence. Finally, Mother persuaded Mrs. Galloway to go home and that she would handle everything. Indeed a very nice, well dressed, African-American couple came knocking. She opened the door, welcomed them in and they ordered two Coca-Colas. They sat quietly and drank their beverages. Then they paid their check and left quietly. As she finished recounting that day, I looked over and tears were rolling down her face. Moments later, I exited the highway and dashed into a Service Station bathroom, where I cried like a baby. That was one of the Proudest Moments of my Life. My Mother, a Leader long before her time. She later owned that Little Restaurant and it was renamed The Town House. EVERYONE was Welcome to Eat in the Dining Room. I just wish more people could be like my Mother. It would be a much better World. Its okay to Cry and its okay to Love ~ I Love You Mama More than Ever ~ RIP Mrs. Hargrove, I Apologize for my Punctuation and Grammar. ;-)
