Im thinking about the video captured of the woman walking the streets of NYC for 10 hours. The video showcases the catcalling, harassment, and compliments she receives throughout her walking journey. Ive also watched a satire version with a man walking for 10 hours in NYC being referred to as a king and such. Most recently, Ive watched a 3 hour version with a man walking and getting the same treatment the woman got, catcalls and all. Whats started bothering me is that, in both cases with the men, they seem to try and make light of the situation with the woman, referring to it as harassment (with air quotes). I dont think the video with the woman is trying in any way to say that only women have such a hard time of it. It runs across the board. Yes, men receive it as well. But to make light of the situation with the young woman is part of the problem at hand. No one should have to deal with being bombarded and intruded upon in that way. Compliments are wonderful, so long as they are, indeed, compliments...and not an excuse to try and weasel your way into someones space without permission. Im a black male, living an alternative lifestyle, and sometimes my fashion choices reflect negative reactions from people. On any given day, I can walk down the street and get called everything from a nasty *ss f*ggot who will die of AIDS to a n*gger who doesnt know his place. (And, both of those are actual quotes) We all have our difficulties in the world, but to thoughtlessly brush someone elses off to the side is part of the problem. Oftentimes, I bring up how much I remember people being nicer when I was younger. Is that because I grew up in the south, or is it that the inevitable has occurred and people have changed with the times? I dont know, but Im going with the latter. I didnt mean to fall into a rant, but I just wanted to share something thats kind of a big deal and important to me. Something to think about...
