Im writing a dissertation. Im getting better, as far as reading concerned. While the tall student passed out his handbills, the round one went to the podium and started lecturing. The handbils were full of the usual simplistic sloganeering: Smash Fraudulent Elections for University President; Marshal All Forces for New All-Campus Strike; Crush the Imperial-Educational-Industrial Complex. I had no problem with what they were saying, but the writing was lame. It had nothing to inspire confidence or arouse the passions. And the round guys speech was just as bad--the same old tune with different words. The true enemy of this bunch was not State Power but Luck of Imagination. -Haruki Murakami, Norwegian Wood The last sentence is so puchy, isnt it? I like this. In a certain paper, a scholar or something mentioned about the name of music Norwegian Wood, recorded by the Beetles. He insisted the Wood means not Forest in Norway but Wooden furniture made in Norway. For a long time, Ive thought it means Norwegian Forest, and now, making sure the lirycs, I start thinking that wooden furniture is logically correct... Which is true in fact? Of course, the vague and mysterious image of Norwegian wood is also marvelous for literature, though. By the way, in Japan almost of all people believe it is Norwegian Forest. ノルウェイの森?ノルウェイ製の木製家具?どっちだろう?正直なところ、二つの意味があってこそ、なんだろうかと思う今日この頃。
