Imitation of Christ by Thomas Kempis Book 3: Interior Conversation Chapter 10 On the Joy of Serving God and Abandoning the World Disciple: In this You have shown the tenderness of Your charity, that when I strayed away from You, You bought me back again to serve You and commanded me to love You. 2. It is not granted to all persons to abandon the world and to lead a solitary life in Your service. What really amazes me is that You admit into Your service such an unworthy one as I, and make me one with Your chosen servants. 3. You know, O Lord, all that I have is Yours, even those things with which I serve You. But in Your goodness, it is rather You Who serve me. 4. And now what shall I give You in return for these innumerable blessings? O my God, if only I could serve You all the days of my life. This is my desire, that I implore You: that I may always praise You and that you will supply whatever is wanting to me. 5. It is a great honor to serve You, and to despise all things for love of You. They who, for Your Names sake, enter upon the narrow way, laying aside all worldly business, will have great spiritual freedom. 6. O happy and joyful service of God, which makes us free and holy! O holy state of religion, which makes us like the Angels, pleasing to God, feared by evil spirits, and edifying to all the faithful. *** Goodnight. XO
