In 1968, when I was four years old, cuddled on a mattress in front of our family’s “first television” set I remember watching the screen and listening as those aboard Apollo Eight shared what they were experiencing. Unknown to most people today, all this occurred against the raging backdrop of events that year that included the assassinations of the Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy in addition to continued violent protests against the Vietnam War. Caught on video was the “Earthrise” caught on video against the backdrop of the horizon of the moon… those within that tiny capsule were amazed by the beauty of the sight: “…the vast loneliness of the moon is awe-inspiring…it makes you realize just what you have back there on earth. The earth from here is a grand oasis in the big vastness of space.” “From the crew of Apollo Eight, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas and God bless all of you—all of you on the good Earth.” Well, today, this “earth” no longer exists. It is gone. All around the world, glaciers are melting and oceans are rising and the earths temperature rises; wind patterns that once determined and stabilized local climates no longer exist. Here in Treaty Four the Westerlies no longer exist. That’s why when you go outside most days there is no wind.
