In June 1978 Police Officer William McNamara was on foot patrol at St. Nicholas Houses when he was suddenly and viciously assaulted by a suspect. During the struggle PO McNamara was shot twice suffering life-threatening injuries injuries. Though critically wounded PO McNamara was able to give responding officers accurate information which assisted in the capture of the suspect, Police Officer McNamaras injuries from point-blank gunshot wounds resulted in his permanent paralysis. On 17 November 1978, though only recently released from the hospital, PO McNamara received the NYC Housing Authority Police Department Medal of Honor from Mayor Koch. PO McNamara though still recovering from his wounds and in spite of his paralysis insisted on using leg braces and ctrutches in order to be standing to receive his medal. In the following years PO McNamara never allowed his injuries to limit his life. He had a successful career and recently retired as an executive with a large corporation. His fortitude and determination both as a police officer and as a private citizen is inspirational. PO Bill McNamara is a credit to all police officers who have served the City of New York.
