In Memory of Mrs. Lilia Castanos and Fr. Jimmy Borces Today, we remember two persons who have just passed on and are now at peace in the loving arms of the Heavenly Father. Perhaps only a handful personnel and alumni here present today have been personally touched by these persons. Nevertheless, by virtue of their having served Andres Soriano Memorial School, they have left their mark and their stories need to be told so we, in the present time, can better understand our beginnings and thus, appreciate what we have today. Fr. Jimmy Borces Fr. Jimmy Borces hails from Talamban, Cebu and was the school chaplain from 1984 – 1985. Those already present in those years will remember a young priest who daily celebrated the Holy Eucharist in the chapel. With his youthful countenance and charm, it was easy for him to strike conversations with the students as he walked around the school campus. This allowed Fr. Jimmy to use the conversations as moments of guidance and. in a way, helped to maintain the discipline of the students. Short his stint in ASMS may be, but definitely Fr. Jimmy left his mark and he is remembered. Mrs. Lilia Orodio Castaños Mrs. Lilia Orodio Castaños served Andres Soriano Memorial School as Guidance Counselor from 1973 – 1980, after which she was appointed Director of another De La Salle Supervised school in Aroroy, Masbate, the Andres Soriano Junior Memorial School, which she served in that capacity for three years. In 1983, Mrs. Castaños became the Director of Andres Soriano Memorial School. I was then only a one year old teacher and my memories of her are still vivid. It was under her administration that the Instructional Study Units were drafted, edited, revised, refined and used in the academic subjects. Dr. Mike Rapatan, then a De La Salle Brother, was the resource person. Mrs. Castaños always instilled in the teachers that the best visual aid is the teacher herself; thus, new teachers had to go through Personality Development and Public Relations training. Wearing of lipstick and proper dressing were a must. As early as 6:30 in the morning, she would already be in school, in her long white dress, with curlers on her hair, demonstrating to the janitors how to sweep the corridors and the surroundings…and this made us mindful not to litter the school campus with trash. Her height and the way she carried herself as she walked along the corridors with her Bandolino shoes heralding her presence, instilled some kind of “positive fear” in the hearts of the students and faculty and staff… making all of us strive to do no wrong. For six years, Mrs. Castaños served the school as director ...with her own brand of discipline …expecting each and every student and personnel to deliver no less than excellence. In the words of two alumni… “Mrs. Castaños made an impact on every student…I remember how elegant she was…she had true presence when she entered a room.” Rest in peace, Madame Castaños. Thank you for your positive influence, pushing us to do our best, expecting excellence from us, teaching us respect and manners, helping us shape our lives. You have touched a whole community and lived a rich life and you will be forever remembered.
