In a discussion on the need to carry guns I put this little bit of math together. Suppose that over 50 years there are 50 active shooter incidents in America per year (much higher than the real number) and that each incident involves an average of 40 people that might be able to respond immediately. With our population of 350 million people that means you have: (50 * 50) / (350000000 / 40 ) * 100 = 0.02857% as the likelihood that you will ever be able to take down a shooter. BTW, the chance of being struck by lighting in your lifetime is 1 in 3000 or 0.0333%.
