In a little less than nine months, we will bring our first child into the world. It brings me great joy everyday. However, there are so many issues in our society that we will be forced to subject he or she to. I want our child to know love and compassion, but this knowledge does not come without knowing hatred and death. He or she will learn all about the hatred that engulfs our world. He or she will have so many questions... Mommy, why are they burning things? Mommy, why did that person die? I am not looking forward to having to answer those questions because it is hard for me to rationalize it for myself. The peace and equality that our world has been working towards is unraveling at the seams. I understand the hurt and grief that is being felt, but how many lives will be lost before this resolves? How will I justify this hatred coming from both sides of each situation to my child? We are ecstatic about the development of our child... but what is happening to the development of our country? Our world? Do not destroy yourselves. Do not forget the individuals before us that worked towards equality, peace, and love. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
