In a majority decision, the Catalan High Court this morning agreed to admit dozens of criminal complaints filed against Catalan First Minister Artur Mas, his Deputy First Minister, Joana Ortega, and the regional Education Minister, Irene Rigau, including the one filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office after controversy over the office’s independence from the government. “The plenary of the civil and criminal bench of the Catalan High Court, during its meeting today”, said the press statement: “agreed in its majority to admit all of the criminal complaints linked to the events related to the supposed disobedience of the Constitutional Court order of November 4, 2014, as well as all of those events that are directly or indirectly linked to them.” On November 4, Spain’s Constitutional Court ruled for a second time that all preparatory activities related to the simulated vote on November 9 were prohibited, but the Catalan government insisted hours later that it would go ahead with the event anyway. The complaints accuse Mr. Mas and his regional ministers of contempt of court, misconduct in public office and misuse of public funds.
