In honor of Throwback Thursday I thought Id share this little tidbit about myself. Many many years ago (back in my 20s)... in a land far far away...(okay it was Huntington Beach CA), I spent a summer shooting underwater video in a special 30 deep swimming pool that served as a test lab for NASA at McDonald Douglas. My job was to swim around in scuba gear with an underwater video camera and send a live video feed back to the surface via an umbilical cord for the engineers in the control room to see while timed testing was conducted by the astronauts in the pool. This was in preparation for the space station. Everything that happens at the space station is on a timed agenda. Thus we had to time and test all of the procedures and tools in a weightless atmosphere (underwater here on earth) in preparation for the real deal. Different parts of the space station were built underwater in this 70’ diameter tank and then we practiced building, fixing and in some cases just testing new tools. One of the items I remember was a simple wrist strap to keep a wrench from floating off in space should it be dropped. So I never understood years later why an astronaut on a real spacewalk lost a wrench that ended up floating away never to be seen again. Anyway… it was a great time and memory for me. These images are not from the same time I was there… but are very similar to the experiences I had while working with Pete Conrad and others from the NASA team.
