In light of the Michael Brown decision, thank you - TopicsExpress

In light of the Michael Brown decision, thank you @TheWashingtonPost and author Stacey Patton for describing one of the many reasons we must reconsider pre-conceived notions, perception and misperception. Who are the criminals among us? At a glance, are some children perceived differently than others? While some children, of any color, have unusual physical strength or a background that leads them towards violence it behooves us all and is our obligation, as fellow human beings, to understand these children and together recognize/verbalize how society has participated in creating situations that lead youth to violence. We all bear responsibility. We all must become re-educated about the disenfranchised among us and participate in enabling lifestyles that are healthy for children and communities. This re-education about who is disenfranchised, in what ways, how this has come to be and the impact it has, is critical - especially when we admit that children are children. We are all responsible for racism and prejudice. If we ourselves are not racist or prejudice we must ask ourselves, in what ways have we allowed racism and prejudice to flourish, harm and ruin so many lives? To say, this is the time, is beyond an understatement. At this time there is a movement afoot and THIS IS THE TIME not to lose that momentum! Eyes open, ready to act lets say out loud that all of our systems from financial to educational to judicial and beyond, function through a lense of prejudice - often with a goal of prejudice. Recognize, verbalize, act.
