In light of the derecognition of Intervarsity on the California - TopicsExpress

In light of the derecognition of Intervarsity on the California State College campuses, it might be interesting to see this article in Christianity Today (Jan/Feb 2014) about the latest research of the impact of Protestant missionaries, who have been long accused of colonialism and seen as a negative. Research says otherwise: Areas where Protestant missionaries had a significant presence in the past are on average more economically developed today, with comparatively better health, lower infant mortality, lower corruption, greater literacy, higher educational attainment (especially for women), and more robust membership in nongovernmental associations. This article is very interesting for anyone who has heard that missionaries have caused problems for natives. In reality, this very compelling study says that the legacy (and remember we are only talking sociologically here) of Protestant missionaries is long lasting...for the good. The author of the article, Andrea Palpant Dilley, summarizes by saying In short: Want a blossoming democracy today? The solution is simple - if you have a time machine: Send a 19th Century missionary. Just something interesting I am pondering today.
