In many families, for any number of reasons, it falls upon one of the children or is accepted by one child, to become the primary caretaker of their aging parents. That daughter or son, takes on an unpredictable and difficult task, sometimes incredibly so. In my family, that child is my little sister Cherie who, for years, took care of both of my parents as their health failed, as they moved through heart operations, and hospitalizations, my mothers Parkinsons disease and their general increasing limitations. Living with them, 24/7, ever on alert, taking a job hit to do so, seeing to it that they never had to live in a nursing home but were cared for by a family member who deeply loved them, allowing the others of us peace of mind knowing that mom and dad were always in loving and very capable hands, has been an amazing gift that Cherie gave our parents, and a gift to my brother and other sister as well. I just want to acknowledge Cherie Carlson Krauss, to thank her again and to thank all children who perform this epic life task of deep active care for parents in their final years. I respect you greatly Cherie and I thank you forever. It is an honor to be the brother of a person who manifests this kind of compassion, and echoes my mothers own active care for others.
