In my book, Eve is the name of a female creature; given to her by James a twelve year old boy. He said, “Because you are the first of your kind, I will call you Eve.” She is also the Matriarch of a divided clan. When the name Dab is given, he is also a leader. You decide what part he plays in my book, The Saluda River Sighting. Here is a passage from my book. Some distance away, danger takes the form of a cave dweller bent on claiming his position. Left behind by Eve, he struggles to cope with change. Awake from a past night of human intervention, loyal followers respect him at arm’s length. Poking at him, Eve’s followers hold allegiance to their missing leader, incited his wrath and determination. They regard him with caution and distrust. The coals of the dwindling fire glow dimly, releasing a sliver of smoke. Drifting upward, it escapes in a tendril toward the natural chimney and sky. The entire clan is edgy with indecision, fist, and shoulders tense with the division of allegiance between Eve and Dab. Dab, disillusioned by Eve’s disappearance, knows she left the clan for a purpose. She will lead them all into a new way of living together with humans. Setting his jaw tightly, Dab shakes his fist at the opposition. Living in the shadows, eluding the humans, has always worked. With a snarl, Dab faces each of the clan. He stares into their dark, black eyes defiant with all his being. Inside the cavern, twenty-five of Dab’s warriors line the still bloodied wall where the previous night the dark man strung up and prepared each deer carcass. Arms raised high, furious screams are directed at the far side of a safe sanctuary. The deafening sound reverberates from the rock walls traveling deep into the system of smaller caves. Though numerous, the larger clan of Eve’s subjects cower under this murderous sound. Never before has the clan experienced such a division. Unsure of the best reaction, the clan considers that Dab’s disobedience is best dealt with by Eve. He is like a wayward adolescent in need of subtle direction.
