In my first year of undergrad I took a theology elective. I learned a lot in that class, but there are two things I remember the most. First, that I needed a bigger backpack (and wallet) for all of the required reading. More importantly, I spent quite a bit of time with the concepts in Matthew, particularly the section about loving your enemies. It’s easy to love the ones who are good, that love you back. But it is a challenge, a life changing challenge, to forgive, to pray for those who cause harm. Overall the class was difficult, but following that particular charge has always been especially challenging. So when I saw Wendy Davis’ much maligned wheelchair ad, I was ready to go on the offense. But I thought about that class, and well – Wendy Davis won’t win, but she is clearly in a bad place. It’s times like this where we can vote against her, but still pray that her heart softens. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. politico/story/2014/10/wendy-davis-greg-abbott-wheelchair-ad-111783.html
