In partnership with CounterTrade and Hewlett Packard, Aurora Public Schools recently hosted its fourth annual Girls Technology Camp. The day-long event takes girls through a series of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) workshops, showing them that STEM is fun and that girls can do it too. The students made and launched rockets, explored circuits with lights and sounds and disassembled and reassembled handheld tablets. The camp also featured a 3-D design challenge using the popular online game Minecraft. Men outnumber women in nearly every scientific field by college graduation. According to a recent report from the Census Bureau, only about a quarter of workers in science, technology, engineering and math fields (STEM) are women. Aurora Public Schools is committed to tackling the dramatic under-representation of women in STEM. This year, the camp began with a question and answer session by keynote speaker Nancy Felix, who is a Senior Information Technology (IT) Manager with healthcare company DaVita, Inc. She is currently managing software developers and quality assurance analysts.
