In several places in the world, notably in Africa, there are people being maimed and killed, even burned alive, because of being accused of being a witch. (Exodus 22:18) Some of the accusers may be Christian, may be Muslim, may be also witches themselves. Sometimes those to whom such things occur ARE witches. Of course this is nothing like what most western people think about upon hearing that word. Nature lovers, Gia people, chanting naked in a circle, or witch conventions where various wands and other paraphernalia are sold. Nor is it especially relevant that there is no such thing as real witchcraft in which one brings about supernatural events, personages, etc. The point is that many of these people deeply BELIEVE is such nonsense and then the actions spurred by such beliefs are often horrific for both animals and humans. Some of those who fight against witchcraft actually mean only the kind that truly does involve human blood and human body parts, especially those of children. Many of these same people have no problem doing their own witchcraft using only non human animals. But one thing to remember is that, according to the beliefs, the animals being slaughtered - chicken, goat, pig, bull, etc.) must experience as much fear and suffering as possible before death to make the magic stronger and work better. While obviously all humans are genetically human, those very slight difference, along with environment, can make vast differences among them.
