In the book of James, were given one of the most difficult exhortations the Word offers. In Chapter 1, James tells us that we should count it All joy when we encounter trials. Before we go further, Allow me remind you what Christian joy is and keep in mind that joy is much different than happiness. Joy is an optimistic spirit in response to the events of life, regardless of what they are. But let me be clear about this, It isn’t just some grim optimism. Real joy overflows and affects our emotions. There are even times when we rejoice through tears. And yet, even then, joy will overcome the tears of sorrow so that optimism is felt in the emotions. Its a hope and assurance that raises beyond the circumstances. This is the kind of joy that James is pointing us to. In the Greek, this passage is in what is called; the imperative command mode. What does that mean? It means that it is more than just a good idea or suggestion. It is a mandate for all Christians. James isn’t offering a suggestion that might be helpful. He isn’t giving pious advice to be accepted or rejected as we see fit. He is commanding us, with all the authority that he has from Christ, to rejoice when trials come. Christian joy is not optional. It is required. And since We are to rejoice in the midst of trials, Joy becomes an obedience issue. A lack of true Christian joy in the midst of testing is not a matter of having a certain kind of personality that just doesn’t do that sort of thing. It has nothing to do with personality. James goes even further. He uses one simple word that faith is built upon; knowing then my brothers, that the trial of your faith worketh patience. We do not rejoice despite the facts. We rejoice because of the facts. We rejoice because of what we know. Because we are assured that in every situation, God is imparting unto us; virtues which only He can endow us with. So, the next time you enter into a trial; (probably before the day even gets a good start) remember two things; 1) It is a mandate to rejoice. Why? 2) The Lord is most assuredly working a high virtue within you through it.
