In the end, I do not think that hierarchy is a problem. It is just how we organize and structure our organizations/societies, such that they can have decisions being made, easily and effectively that can be traced back to the people on the “top”, such that accountability can be had for their own actions. It helps define the roles that each person needs to play within the group/society, such that the society/organization is defined. The group is able to form into a coherent, and a functional team is born from the mass of people. The problem with hierarchy seems to come when notions of authority and being an authority get mixed into the mileu of thought that comes from the members of the organization, on high and down below as well. In the end, we are sentient life and, therefore, always capable of making mistakes, no matter how high or infallible we may think ourselves or appear to be on the surface. The problem with holding people in regard or in positions of authority too much, is that it disables the general milue of the population/organization from being able to see and/or comprehend the mistakes that the “authority” makes, making it harder, if not impossible, to correct. The other problem, is that it can make the person/people who are occupying the position of “authority” think that they are beyond what they are and who they are as an individual, both in and out of the organizational context. This, again, makes it more difficult, if not impossible, to correct a mistake/series of mistakes, thanks to the individual(s) who are in power and their lack of mental practice. If one is to tread into positions of high hierarchical positions, it is, on the tangible level, critical that they overcome the negative senses of authority that could become pervasive in their brains, thus limiting their abilities to socially interact with people and increasingly the likelihood that mistakes will be made without correction. On the other hand, they must not be afraid or timid in using their defacto authority (by virtue of their merit, character and relative position in the formal/informal organization) positively for the sake of the whole society at the very most (and for the sake of their own self, in the fullest sense, at the very least). Tough balancing act. Only one mistake allowed. Whole tower fall down. Think about it.
