In the next few days you might hear that Israel reservists of 8200 unit (equivalent of US NSA agency) refuse to serve in reserve service for moral reasons. As a (proud) graduate of that unit I wanted to set some things clear - the timing and way these 43 people chose to refuse to serve is a complete political stance. I am deeply saddened, not because they refused service, but because of the way they chose to do so. They could and should have raised their objections within the chain of command (and there is a way to do so). They could ask to be transferred to another unit or field of work - and there is a way to do so a well. The fact that they chose to keep quiet and serve in one of the more comfortable and cushioned units in IDF, make me think they cared more about their own behind than any of the moral values they want to seem to proclaim. The fact that they waited (my guess years?) to do so, and chose this time and way, says to me one thing only - these people did not care about the morality of their or 8200 actions. They cared to make a political statement, that would create waves. So, personally, I am glad they are not going to serve in 8200 anymore, there is no place for people like that, there. 8200 is the largest unit in the IDF, comprising thousands of people at any given time. Its alumni and reservists are obviously way more than that, but as a Russian saying goes - a spoon of tar ruins a barrel of honey....
