In the summer of 2011, my brother, my sister and I divided the list into thirds and got to work moving our mother out of our childhood home. It was a melancholy task, but there was one item on my to-do list that was a bit of a kick: Return Billie Jean King’s tennis dress, which she wore on her way to the 1972 Wimbledon title, to its rightful owner....WHEN I REACHED KING on the phone to ask her about the dress, in early 2013, she remembered it immediately....“I loved that dress,” she said. “I can tell you what year. It’s 1972.” She appreciated the cut and the comfort, she said. The dress could breathe. She probably thought it was lucky that summer....I asked her what I should do with the warm-up, the part I had found on the last trip through the house. Should I mail that to her office, too? ...“The office is good,” she said. Then without hesitation, she told me, “If you want to keep it, if it’s important to you because it’s connected to your mom, you just let me know.”
