In this article the authors discuss different hypotheses of why U.S. citizens believe that crime is widespread and is a huge problem in the United States even though official crime data shows otherwise. They discuss how cultivation theory is the best way to explain why people fear crime so much. The cultivation theory says that fear of crime is caused by being exposed to extremely violent television shows. They also explore other theories like news programs that seem to only cover crime could be causing people to fear crime. This article discusses how mass media and news programs could make someone believe that crime is on the increase and explain why we should not trust the news and other forms of media to inform us about crime and how often it occurs. This article explains how the media can misinform society on crime and how often it occurs and causes you to believe that crime is out of control which is one of the assumptions society gets from watching media.
