In truth, America was never really founded as a free society. It has always been a propertied society. At the start, one needed to be a property owner to be accorded rights. The very embodiment of this notion was slavery, where people were property. Even in todays society, a person without property is at a distinct disadvantage. At least in the Founders day, property was nearly free if you were willing to work it. Could never find me a bank for a home loan. I have spent over $150,000 in this house and I have nothing. Banks own our society. Samuel Adams was considered suspect by many member of the Continental.
