In what turned out to be the largest gathering of FROGs outside of this years International Rally in Goshen, over 200 FROGs in more than 90 RVs came together in central Iowas Amana Colonies to celebrate FROG-toberfest. Spearheaded by Deb & Al Bahr and Ron & Amy Benhart, with an able assist from Jay & Maria Thomas and Gary & Joyce Breeze, the event proved to be a rousing success. Nearly 90% of the group turned out to be attending their first FROG event. Thats truly a great tribute to the growth of the organization as well as the excellent word of mouth about both FROG and Forest River. Pins on a map showing everyones hometowns included locations as far away as Washington State and Florida. Despite temperatures that dipped into the mid 30s overnight, the FROGs enjoyed great food, both in a catered dinner and breakfast and in a potluck dinner. Potlucks always encourage people to dust off their finest offerings and one-up their neighbors, and this one was no exception. Sumptuous meals were complemented by good-natured competition in a bean-bag tournament, site decorating, a pet parade, and more. In addition to the events organized by members, the Amana Colonies and their German-themed Oktoberfest were a great draw. The seven Amana Colonies were founded by Germanic immigrants as a center of communal living. Over the years, the communal arrangement began to disintegrate, and it eventually gave way to private property ownership and private enterprise. Early businesses such as the woolen mill that still produces beautiful fabrics and agricultural enterprises eventually gave way to more modern pursuits. The first microwave oven, the Amana RadarRange, takes its name from the factory located in the Colonies. Braving the chilly autumn weather but enjoying the fall colors and blue skies, the FROGs took the opportunity to enjoy the Oktoberfest celebration, including a parade, ethnic food, German music, a variety of shopping venues, and steins of their favorite brew. Attendance prizes provided by FROG and by local Forest River dealers added to the festivities. As the weekend drew to a close and everyone prepared to move on to the next adventure, all agreed that it had been a terrific event -- so much that a return visit is already in the works for next fall. Youll be able to learn more about that, and much more, at forestriverfrog/events.
