Indian IAS Academy (iiA): (29.09.2014) Dear UPSC aspirants Todays Current Titbits: National News 1) O. Panneerselvam to be sworn in as TN CM today; Jayalalithaa to move Karnataka HC for bail- O. Panneerselvam is likely to be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu this afternoon. The timing has not been specified yet. Party sources say that all depends on the filing of the bail application of AIADMK Supremo J Jayalalithaa. Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam has been chosen to be the next Chief Minister after the AIADMK supremo was convicted and sentenced to four years imprisonment by a special court in Bangalore on Saturday in a corruption case. The ruling AIADMK MLAs yesterday elected Panneerselvam as their legislative party leader and staked their claim to form the Government. Panneerselvam, who was chosen by Jayalalithaa in a similar situation in 2001, was unanimously elected as leader of AIADMK Legislature Party in Chennai last evening, a day after Jayalalithaas conviction and sentencing in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case. The objective of the party now is to move the bail plea and cancel the quantum of punishment. The ruling party has a thumping majority in the Assembly and also is the third largest party in the Parliament having 37 members of a total of 39 constituencies in the State.Meanwhile, the bail petition of Jayalalithaa is likely to be filed before the Karnataka High Court today. The petition could be moved before the vacation bench or before the Chief Justice. The vacation bench functions only on Tuesday and Thursday. AIR Correspondent adds that if the vacation bench does not take up the matter, then bail petition will be listed only after the vacation on October 7. 2) ISRO to launch Navigational Satellite on October 10- After the historic success of Mars Orbiter Mission, ISRO scientists are now working on the launch of a navigational satellite. The launch of IRNSS 1C is scheduled at 2 am on October 10. IRNSS 1C is third of the seven satellites planned for the formation of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System. All the seven satellites are planned to be in space by next year. IRNSS will provide Standard Positioning Service and Restricted Service with a position accuracy of better than 20 meters in the 1500 kilometres area covering the Indian peninsula. This will provide terrestrial, aerial and marine navigation accurately and help disaster management, vehicle tracking and fleet management, mobile phone tracking, mapping of terrain as well as air and sea navigation. International News Ashraf Ghani to be sworn in as new Afghan President today- New Afghan President will take oath today in a grand ceremony in Kabul amid tight security. Former Finance Minister and academic Ashraf Ghani will assume the power as the President and Abdullah as Chief Executive, similar to a Prime Minister, after a three-month long stand off between them over the Presidential election. President elect Ghani succeeds President Hamid Karzai. The ceremony will mark the countrys first democratic transfer of power , a benchmark seen by international donors as a key legacy of the costly military and civilian intervention since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001.The schedule for inauguration day has been kept secret for security reasons, and few details have been released about the guest list. Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari will represent India at the ceremony, while John Podesta, Counselor to US President Barack Obama, will lead a 10-strong US delegation. Pakistan will be represented by President Mamnoon Hussain. Many other countries, including Britain and France, will be represented only by their ambassadors in Kabul. Business News Coal blocks’ cancellation: Bankers express serious concern- Bankers have expressed serious concern regarding the ramifications of the Supreme Courts order cancelling allocation of coal blocks. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai yesterday, the Chief of the Indian Banks Association, M V Tanksale said the banking industry is concerned if the order results in the non- availability of coal for performing assets. He added that IBA may seekregulatory forbearance if the ruling impacts asset performance. Tanksale pointed out that names of reputed conglomerates like Tatas, Jindals, Birlas are among those affected and therefore it is not necessary that assets may go for restructuring or turn NPA as the industrial groups will try to protect reputations and credit records. Sports News Asian Games, Day 10: India to figure in two Gold medal matches of Tennis- In the Incheon Asian Games, the duo of Sania Mirza and Saketh Myneni in the Mixed Doubles, and the pair of Sanam Singh and Saketh in the Mens Doubles will battle it out for Gold today. While India will play Korea in the Mens Doubles, it will slug it out against Chinese Taipei in the Mixed Doubles.In other events, the Womens Hockey team will clash with a tough Korean side for a place in the finals.
