Indian actor Amir Khan in recent days when adopted a child from a surrogate mother, the topic of surrogacy was in the public eye. Surrogacy has been a boon for the couples who can not have their own child. But as it is said every coin has two sides. The surrogacy also have a other side, the side of pathetic fact hidden behind surrogacy which occurred me when I heard a women from Delhi who become surrogate. Chandini, 28, a mother of two daughters decided to become surrogate mother to earn money for her family and wants a better life for her daughters. Her husband’s earning as a daily wage carpenter – Rs 3,500 or around $80 a month – is not enough to support their two daughters, so Chandini works as a housemaid and has become a surrogate. She has been promised almost $4,500 for carrying and delivering this foetus for a couple. This money means a lot to chandini. India legalized commercial surrogacy in 2002 and since then IVF centers are multiplying fast. Gujarat has become unofficial surrogacy capital of the globe. Availing the chance, many Indian women rent their womb for money and for their family. Indian population living below the international poverty line of $1.25 per day, its only for the financial problems the husbands allow their wives for surrogacy. Otherwise, in point of my view, surrogacy is still not acceptable as much in India. Another social reality pressures poor women for surrogacy is “dowry” that they must pay their daughter’s husbands when they get married as many peoples still follow it as ritual. Apart from this, price hike in all daily needed goods is another problem. Hence to meet their needs, women have got to become surrogate as there is no other source which could give them high amount. Chandini says, “being a surrogate is not easy. It takes a heart to give away a baby you feel growing in your womb for nine months. But its what being a poor makes you do.” Although a surrogate mother can face violence, including social ostracizing and moreover she has to face risks and pain of giving up her baby, she only chooses surrogacy for the betterment of her family. Isn’t she doing a heavenly scarification for her family..? Hats off to those divine women..
